Erykah Badu
New Amerykah Part Two: Return of The Ankn
Regardless of the opinions of the controversial “Window Seat” video we should not get away from the fact that this is a great cd. In years to come I am willing to bet that this project will be in top 25 of music trade periodicals. The intro “20 Feet Tall” Erykah is letting you know from the jump street that she is standing tall to her craft and beliefs. The day the “Window Seat” single released was automatic that the cd was going to slam. Listen to the lyrics to “Window Seat” and tell me if you haven’t had those feelings before.
My favorite track is “Turn Me Away”. I love the way she spiced up the Sylvia Striplin/Roy Ayers “You Can’t Turn Me Away” classic. This will be a highly anticipated song for me at my next Badu concert. The hard driving beat to “Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long” will get your dance on. This song is a must in your ipod. “Umm Hmm” is groovy and sensual, Erykah’s vocals flows like a poet’s pen. You hear something different in this song each time you give it a spin.
The futuristic intro to the track “Love” immediately drops into a Funk groove with a hint of bottom. She shows her Funkateer side on this one. She samples Eddie Kendricks “Intimate Friends” on the track “Fall in Love”. This tune makes a statement and get to the point to not to mess with Badu. Erykah shows off her soft side with the mellow “Incense” and “Out My Mind, Just In Time” these selections wrap up what I feel is a Erykah Badu classic. I forgot to mention the two short interludes “Agitation” and “You Lovin Me” that help to keep the flow. Bravo! Badu you got a winner.
